Colon Cancer - How to Avoid It and How to Detect It

Cancer is now becoming common in our present time. With the way we are living our lives and the number of carcinogenic agents present in our surrounding; we are all left vulnerable to the dreaded disease called cancer. According to experts, one of the most painful cancers is colon cancer. It is a type of cancer that originates in the latter end of the digestive tract. Just like any other cancer, an abnormality in the way the cells behave caused the invasion of the organ. In this case, it is the colon.

Colon cancer can be traced to the diet people usually take. With the low fiber diet and a high fat content diet; people are very much vulnerable to the dreaded ailment. Now, why would the absence of fiber contribute to the development of the cancer cells? It is for the simple reason that fiber helps flush out harmful toxins in our body. With the fiber in our diet, the colon can regularly pass out the feces out of the system reducing the irritation that harmful ammonia and other materials in the feces can cause to the colon's mucosa. But not everything is related to poor fiber in the food we eat. It can also be because of the fact that we eat too much grilled food. Grilled foods are known for their burnt parts which translate to carbon. And researches have proven that carbon in the colon is a carcinogenic agent.

Cancer develops in the colon due to the irritation done by the excessive intake of burnt, low fiber and high in fat content food. With a bowel movement that isn't regular, there is an increased irritation to the colon's mucosa causing the cells to transform into cancer cells. Besides from the manner on how people eat, there are evidences that links genetic predisposition as a factor that could even spike up chances of having colon cancer.

Now what are the given signs that you could probably be having colon cancer? With the presence of a tumor inside the colon, there is a probability that your bowel movement will no longer be the same. It could simply mean that you won't be able to eliminate your feces as regular as before. Or, you will be eliminating your feces painfully compared before. If you will have yourself a digital rectal examination, the doctor may be able to find a tumor causing the block in the pathway of the feces. Another test done is blood tests that detect increases in some proteins that could be suggesting the growth of a tumor. Though these tests are all reliable tests, all of them are still considered non-confirmatory tests. The only way to confirm a cancer cell is through biopsy.

There are a lot of ways in order to lessen the risks of colon cancer. The best way to avoid cancer is always by living an active and healthy lifestyle. Since smoking generally increases the risk for any type of cancer, smoking should be avoided at all cost. For the diet, the person should be eating a good balance of food that could give sufficient protein, carbohydrates, fat and of course fiber. And if you are a person who is nearing the 50s, make sure to visit the doctor at least twice annually to have a good check regarding the different diseases that may come with age. Majority of the patients who contracted cancer of the colon are the ones at 50s and above.

On final note, colon cancer is something that is deadly if not prevented or if detected late in the disease process. The best way to combat the disease is through prevention. With the right lifestyle modification, a person has a better chance of living the healthy life free from colon cancer or any cancer for that matter.
